Medals for Matthew March, Jessica Newton & Brandon Greenwood at the British International Championships
Five members of the Shinken Dojo travelled to Glasgow on the weekend of the 1st & 2nd October 2011 to take part in the British International Championships.
First to take the mat was Matthew March in the under 21’s Kata event. Matthew gave an excellent display and battled through the rounds to earn himself a well deserved silver medal. Matthew is no stranger to the podium in such events and has medalled in both English and British Championships.
Next up Jessica Newton in the girls Kumite event, fighting in both her weight class and the open weight categories of her age group. Jessica also fighting through the rounds to gain a credible silver medal in such a prestigious event. Next came her open weight event. Jessica met the girl who had beaten her in the final of her weight class but determined not to let lightning strike twice dispatched her in the early rounds to go on to win bronze.
Following Jessica was Tom McAlindon who is showing great improvement since joining our Dojo. Tom unfortunately narrowly missed out on a medal position on this occasion, fighting his way through the earlier rounds but being nudged out of the tournament by a previous British Champion. Still a good overall performance from Tom.
Day two of the event saw two of our younger competitors take the mat. Amie Newton and Brandon Greenwood both in the Kata events and Brandon in the kumite event also. This was to be the biggest tournament Brandon & Amie had entered so far but this did not faze either of them showing a great maturity in two so young. Amie up first performed an excellent kata but went out surprisingly to a split decision by the referees. Upset but determined to return next year and achieve medal a position.
Eight year old Brandon Greenwood was to be the star of the show at this event winning his way through the rounds with an excellent display of the kata Kushanku leaving all opponents in his wake and taking gold medal in his category winning every round up to the final by unanimous decision.

Well done to all competitors.
