On 22nd January 2012 three members of Shinken Dojo travelled to Sheffield to join the Wado UK Kyu Grade squad competing in the English Karate Federation National Kyu Grade Championships.
Amie Newton and Brandon Greenwood entered both Kata (forms) and Kumite (fighting) events at the championships and Hayden Greenwood entered the Kata section.
First up was Brandon in his Kata event. Brandon showed great maturity for such a young competitor and battled through the rounds to gain a gold medal and becoming EKF National Kyu Grade Kata Champion in his age group.
Amie up next gave an excellent display in the first round of her event winning her way through to the second round in convincing style but was to meet a tough opponent in the next round and narrowly losing out to a split decision by the referees.
Hayden who has not had much experience on the tournament circuit did not let this faze him and performed with confidence in front of the large crowd but unfortunately was also to lose out to a split decision by the referees.
Next for the pair came the kumite events but both narrowly falling short of the medal positions on this occasion.
Brandon was also to join forces with two other members of Wado UK to form a boys kumite team. The boys fought hard to secure a bronze medal for Wado UK.
